Few would argue that Michael Jordan was one of the best basketball players of the last 20 years. Many might argue that he was the single best player ever. During the 1990's, he led the Chicago Bulls to 6 NBA Championships. However, few people remember that he played for Chicago for 6 seasons before their first NBA title. During that time, he held the league scoring record for 4 consecutive seasons from 1986/87 to 1989/90. He was heads and shoulders above his competition, yet it took 6 years to win the championship. Many accounts of Jordan 's career attribute this to his need to grow as a team player. Sure, he was the best scorer in the league, but he hadn't figured out how to leverage the talents of the other members of the team in a way that pushed them to perform at a higher level. Once he figured that out, they were unstoppable: the whole was truly greater than the sum of the parts.
